FoundingHunt vs Wellfound: how to choose
Use FoundingHunt when you want a curated search limited to reviewed founding-team roles, with every equity figure labeled by where the number comes from. Use Wellfound when you want to browse the broader startup market yourself and screen individual postings for founding scope. Using both works well: Wellfound for market breadth, FoundingHunt for a focused founding-role shortlist.
FoundingHunt publishes this comparison and is one of the two services in it. We applied the same questions and evidence standard to both, and we say where Wellfound is the better fit. These are use-case recommendations based on cited public evidence, not an independent ranking.
Compare at a glance
- Browsing and access
- FoundingHuntThe full board, keyword search, filters and job pages are public with no account, and the apply action leads out to the employer's own hiring destination.
- WellfoundCategory feeds, the remote-jobs results and full job pages are public. The job-title and location search on the jobs landing page submits to profile creation, and Wellfound states that creating a profile and applying is free for candidates.
- Finding founding roles
- FoundingHuntEvery listing is reviewed against a published founding-scope policy covering early hires who build a company or establish a function across engineering, product, design, sales, marketing and operations. All 38 roles in the reviewed feed were founding-scoped.
- WellfoundFounding-titled roles appear across functions but are a small fraction of the feed: 4 of 47 unique postings in the sampled jobs landing page and 1 of 52 role titles in the embedded results of the first remote-jobs page, retrieved September 12, 2026. No public founding-only collection was found.
- Search and filters
- FoundingHuntKeyword search plus filters for role, stage, location, remote work, technology, industry, investor and visa sponsorship, all without an account.
- WellfoundThe public remote-jobs page provides role and location or work-policy inputs, and the jobs landing page browses by function. Personalized filters are presented as a profile benefit, so the complete filter set was not enumerated without an account.
- Equity information
- FoundingHuntEvery one of the 38 listings in the reviewed feed carried a numeric range: 13 labeled Verified Equity (employer-disclosed) and 25 Estimated Equity (a FoundingHunt benchmark, not an offer). The published methodology also defines an Equity unavailable state.
- WellfoundPostings can show a numeric equity range, an explicit "No equity" label, or no equity information. Of two sampled founding-titled postings, one showed salary plus a 0.25% equity figure and the other showed salary only. Missing equity information is not the same as no equity.
- Application workflow
- FoundingHuntJob pages link out to the employer's hiring destination; the sampled posting sent candidates to the company's own applicant tracking page. There is no in-platform application inbox.
- WellfoundApplying happens inside Wellfound with a profile, and company cards display response-time badges such as "Top 10% of responders". The end-to-end application flow was not tested.
- Location and freshness
- FoundingHuntLocations are stated per employer, including multi-city and remote arrangements, and eligibility terms are the employer's own. Listings reflect the evidence available at review time, monitoring coverage varies, and there is no universal recheck interval.
- WellfoundPostings carry posted-age labels from "today" to weeks, plus recruiter-activity signals. Remote terms are explicit per posting, including country-restricted remote and preferred timezones; "remote" does not mean worldwide eligibility.
Where each service fits
FoundingHunt
Curated founding-role job board.
- A good fit if
- You have decided you want a founding-team role and want a shortlist where each listing has been reviewed for founding scope, with the source of every equity figure labeled.
- Main limitation
- A curated board is not comprehensive coverage of startup hiring. Estimated Equity is a benchmark, not an employer offer, and a listing does not guarantee the employer is still accepting applications.
- How to use it
- Filter by role, stage and location, then read the equity label on each listing to see whether the number is employer-disclosed or a benchmark before you apply at the employer's destination.
Wellfound
Broad startup jobs and recruiting platform.
- A good fit if
- You want to browse the wider startup market yourself, including roles beyond founding teams, and you are prepared to screen individual postings for actual founding scope.
- Main limitation
- Founding roles are a small, unfiltered slice of a broad feed, and a "founding" title does not establish role scope. Keyword search and applying require a profile, and equity display varies by posting.
- How to use it
- Browse publicly by function or through the remote-jobs interface, open each posting to check scope, equity and location terms, and create a profile when you are ready to apply or want recruiters to find you.
When to use both
Use both when you want market context and a focused shortlist at the same time. Wellfound shows you the broader startup market: what companies of every size and stage are hiring for, what they pay, and how they describe the roles you are considering. FoundingHunt then gives you a reviewed set of founding-scoped roles where the source of each equity figure is already labeled.
Using both also makes sense while you are still deciding whether a founding role is right for you. Comparing established-team roles with founding ones is a legitimate way to test that, and Wellfound’s breadth is the better tool for it.
How the two workflows differ
Where the search starts. FoundingHunt starts from role scope: every listing has passed a human review for founding responsibility before it appears. Wellfound starts from the market: you browse a large feed and do the founding-scope screening yourself, posting by posting.
What an account is for. FoundingHunt does not ask for an account; browsing, filtering and the route to the employer’s application are public. On Wellfound, a profile unlocks keyword search, the apply action and the inbound channel where recruiters and founders contact you.
Where the application goes. FoundingHunt sends you to the employer’s own hiring destination, so each application follows that employer’s process. Wellfound keeps the application inside its platform and adds signals such as response-time badges to help you decide where to spend effort.
What the equity number means. FoundingHunt labels every figure as employer-disclosed (Verified Equity) or a benchmark estimate (Estimated Equity), so you always know the source of the number. Wellfound displays whatever the posting carries: a numeric range, an explicit “No equity” label, or nothing, and the difference between nothing and none is yours to check.
A practical way to run the search
- Write down your constraints first. Location and work authorization, minimum cash compensation, the company stage you want, and the decisions you want to own.
- Scan the broad market on Wellfound. Browse your function and the remote results to see what is available and how postings use founding titles. Note where equity is shown, marked as none, or missing.
- Build the focused shortlist on FoundingHunt. Filter to your role, stage and location, and read whether each equity figure is employer-disclosed or a benchmark estimate.
- Screen every candidate role for actual scope. A founding title is a claim, not proof. Ask who owns the product decisions, the budget and the first hires in your function.
- Verify the destination and the terms. Apply where each service sends you, and confirm cash, equity source, vesting and location requirements with the employer before you treat an offer as real.
What to confirm with the employer
- Is this role establishing a function or joining an established one?
- Which decisions are yours, and which stay with the founders?
- Is the equity figure an employer-disclosed range, an estimate, or still undecided?
- What are the salary, vesting, exercise and work-location terms of the actual offer?

Corrections
If a service description or source is wrong, email support (at) foundinghunt.com with the page URL and supporting evidence. We can review the correction. A changed or unavailable source alone does not prove that an employer has stopped hiring.
