What is a Series A startup?

What changes when you join at Series A

A Series A company is moving from early traction toward repeatable growth. You usually join more structure than at pre-seed or seed—an established product, customers, and clearer priorities—but the team is still early enough for your decisions to shape how the company builds, sells, and hires.

Roles you may find at Series A

Series A teams may still hire founding and early-team engineers, product managers, designers, go-to-market operators, sales leaders, recruiters, and operations hires. Titles often become more specialized as teams grow, so look past “founding” or “first” and ask what you will own, what already exists, and which outcomes the company needs next.

Evaluate ownership, specialization, and scaling

  • Ownership: clarify which decisions, systems, or customer outcomes you control and where a founder or functional leader stays involved.
  • Specialization: decide whether the role lets you remain broad or expects depth in one function as the team adds specialists.
  • Scaling: ask whether success means doing the work yourself, building a repeatable process, hiring a team, or all three in sequence.

Compare salary and equity using current evidence

Start with the compensation shown on each current listing rather than assuming one Series A package. Verified Equity is an employer-disclosed numeric range. Estimated Equity is a FoundingHunt Benchmark: an estimate by role and stage, not an employer offer. Compare cash and equity together, and confirm the percentage on a fully diluted basis, vesting schedule, cliff, exercise terms, and how future dilution could affect ownership. Use FoundingHunt salary guides only where an approved benchmark is available.

Before you apply

  1. Ask what the company has learned from customers and which assumptions still need to be proven.
  2. Confirm why this role is open now and what a strong first six to twelve months would accomplish.
  3. Understand the reporting line, decision rights, current team, and planned hires around your function.
  4. Review the salary, equity source, vesting, exercise, location, and working expectations in the listing and offer.
  5. Check that the application destination is current and matches the company’s authoritative hiring source.
