Founding engineer job boards: how to choose

If you want early technical ownership and equity upside, FoundingHunt offers a curated search focused on founding-team roles. Use Wellfound for broader self-directed browsing, YC Work at a Startup for YC companies, Underdog for selective introductions, and HN Who Is Hiring if you are comfortable searching company-written posts.

FoundingHunt publishes this guide and is one of the services compared. These are use-case recommendations, not an independent ranking. We explain where another service may suit you better and link to the evidence behind the comparison.

Search and application
FoundingHuntBrowse founding-team listings; applications go to the employer's hiring destination. A human reviews a listing before it goes live.
Hacker News: Who Is HiringOpen the latest “Who is hiring?” thread and read the company posts. The official thread asks posters to be part of the hiring company, not recruiting firms or job boards.
Underdog.ioUnderdog describes a closed network: submit a profile, pass its review, then hiring managers contact you. It states that the service is free for candidates.
WellfoundWellfound says creating a profile and applying is free for candidates. It also describes inbound recruiting. The sampled public posting asks candidates to message the founder on Wellfound; full account/application flows were not tested.
YC Work at a StartupYC says candidates can apply with a single profile and let founders contact them. The public software-engineering page includes founding and non-founding titles.
Founding scope
FoundingHuntThe published policy considers ownership and establishing a company or function, not just the word “founding.” Stage and headcount alone do not establish role scope.
Hacker News: Who Is HiringThe thread is not restricted to founding-engineer jobs; do not treat a company-written post as proof of early technical ownership.
Underdog.ioIts founding-engineer page focuses on early technical hires. The wider service describes companies from pre-seed through Series A–C and high-growth stages, so the whole network is not founding-only.
WellfoundA public founding-engineer posting describes building the product surface for a solo-founder, pre-revenue company. It is an example of role detail, not a representative sample of Wellfound's inventory.
YC Work at a StartupThe software-engineering page includes Founding AI Engineer and Founding Product Engineer examples alongside other engineering jobs. The category itself is therefore not founding-only.
Equity information
FoundingHuntVerified Equity is an employer-disclosed numeric range. Estimated Equity is a FoundingHunt Benchmark, not an offer; some listings show Equity unavailable.
Hacker News: Who Is HiringThe retrieved introduction does not establish a numeric-equity disclosure requirement. Check each post and confirm terms with the company.
Underdog.ioThe founding-engineer page says salary and equity are disclosed upfront in introductions. We did not inspect private introductions.
WellfoundPublic listings can display numeric equity and explicit “No equity” labels. Our example expressly offers equity-only compensation with no salary. Missing equity information is not the same as no equity.
YC Work at a StartupThe retrieved engineering category showed salary information but did not establish equity disclosure across all listings. Inspect individual job pages; salary visibility does not prove equity completeness.
Location and access
FoundingHuntCheck each employer's stated location and working requirements. This review does not establish a service-wide visa or worldwide eligibility promise.
Hacker News: Who Is HiringThe rules ask posters to state location and distinguish REMOTE, country-restricted remote and ONSITE. Compliance by every poster was not checked.
Underdog.ioIts how-it-works page describes US hiring partners and remote flexibility. Remote flexibility is not a promise of worldwide eligibility.
WellfoundPublic listings display different locations and country/region-restricted remote arrangements. Confirm the individual posting's eligibility rather than interpreting “remote” as worldwide.
YC Work at a StartupThe public engineering category includes physical locations and geographically restricted remote entries. Company membership is YC-only; candidate eligibility still depends on the job.

FoundingHunt

Curated founding-role job board.

A good fit if
You want founding-team ownership, potential equity upside and room to grow into leadership, not simply a wider list of engineering vacancies. FoundingHunt puts that search first and explains whether an equity figure comes from the employer or a benchmark.
Main limitation
A curated selection is not comprehensive coverage. Estimated Equity is not an employer offer, and appearing on the board does not guarantee the employer is still accepting applications.
How to use it
Start with your engineering role and location, then look for the ownership you want: shaping architecture, working directly with founders or helping build the engineering team. Check the cash compensation alongside equity, and confirm whether the equity figure is employer-disclosed or estimated.

Hacker News: Who Is Hiring

Recurring community hiring thread.

A good fit if
You are willing to read company-written posts and follow each company's own application instructions.
Main limitation
Posting rules are not an independent verification of every opening. This is not the separate HN Jobs feed or YC Work at a Startup.
How to use it
Search within the current thread for “founding,” “first engineer” and your location, then read the whole post. Follow its instructions rather than posting an unrelated application in the discussion.

Underdog.io

Selective candidate-matching network.

A good fit if
You prefer a reviewed profile and inbound conversations to applying to individual public listings.
Main limitation
You must be accepted into the network. Private introductions were not inspected, so the comparison cannot verify their volume, quality or response rate.
How to use it
Check whether its candidate profile and locations fit your search before joining. Ask about role scope and compensation when an introduction arrives; do not assume an introduction guarantees an offer.

Wellfound

Broad jobs and recruiting platform.

A good fit if
You want to search beyond a founding-only collection and are prepared to assess individual opportunities.
Main limitation
A “founding engineer” title does not tell you whether a role is salaried, how early the company is, or how much ownership you will have.
How to use it
Search founding-engineer and relevant adjacent titles, then check the cash component, equity terms, team context and location. Broader search scope can surface useful options, but it also makes your own screening important.

YC Work at a Startup

YC-company job platform.

A good fit if
You specifically want to consider YC companies and value a shared candidate profile.
Main limitation
The service is limited to YC companies. YC affiliation alone does not establish founding scope, company quality or whether a role fits you.
How to use it
Start with the engineering category, examine founding and adjacent titles, and check the company's role page before completing your profile or applying. Use another channel if you also want to consider non-YC companies.

A practical founding-engineer search

Start with the opportunity, not the size of the job board

Joining early can mean taking responsibility for a product or team before you would reach that scope through a conventional promotion ladder. Equity can also give you a financial stake in what you help build. That combination of ownership, potential upside and room to grow is the reason to search specifically for founding roles.

FoundingHunt is built around that search. Wellfound and YC Work at a Startup cover more than founding hires; Underdog’s wider network spans multiple company stages; HN Who Is Hiring is an open hiring thread rather than a founding-role collection. Their broader scope can be useful, especially if you’re also considering established teams. It simply means doing more of your own screening for founding scope.

These are opportunities, not promised outcomes. Early responsibility does not guarantee a promotion, and startup equity may never become liquid or valuable. A focused board helps you find the right kind of conversation; the employer still needs to substantiate the role and offer.

  1. Write down your constraints first. Location and work authorization, minimum cash compensation, preferred company stage, and the decisions you want to own. An equity percentage is not a substitute for salary you need to live on.
  2. Choose a primary channel. Pick the workflow you will actually use: founding-role focus, broader browsing, YC membership, selective introductions or company-written threads.
  3. Add one complementary channel. For example, supplement a YC-only search with a broader board, or public applications with an inbound network. This is a suggested workflow, not a measured route to more interviews.
  4. Read beyond the title. Ask who owns product decisions, architecture, deployment, customer conversations and the first engineering hires. Ask what already exists and what success in the first months means.
  5. Verify the offer and the destination. Check that the application goes to the intended employer. Confirm cash, equity source, fully diluted ownership basis, vesting and exercise terms. Review the employer’s current location requirements.

Questions a platform cannot answer for you

  • Are you building the first product, scaling an existing one, or filling an established specialist role?
  • Which decisions are yours, and which stay with a technical founder?
  • What team, funding and customer context can the company substantiate?
  • Is the equity figure an employer-disclosed range, an estimate, or still undecided?
  • What are the salary, vesting, exercise and work-location terms of the actual offer?

Read the existing guides on founding-role red flags, equity offers and founding versus senior engineering. They help frame the questions; they cannot verify a particular employer for you.
