About Wafer
Wafer builds AI that optimizes AI infrastructure. Its agents profile a workload's full serving stack — model, engine, kernels, and hardware — then search batching, decoding, quantization, and kernel configurations against real production traffic to find the fastest verified setup, and keep optimizing as traffic shifts, models update, and new hardware lands. Customers bring the model, traffic shape, and SLO; Wafer builds and maintains the dedicated inference endpoint around them. Founded by Emilio Andere and Steven Arellano out of Y Combinator's Summer '25 batch, the team's mission is to maximize intelligence per watt.
Traction
- Raised a $40M Series A co-led by Marathon and Chemistry, with participation from Wing, AMD Ventures, and Outset Capital; existing investors Y Combinator and Fifty Years doubled down.
- Angels include Jeff Dean, Guillermo Rauch, Andy Fang, Kyle Vogt, Akshay Kothari, and Matthew Prince.
- Customers run production workloads on Wafer's dedicated inference endpoints, which the platform keeps re-optimizing after launch.
Team track record
- Founders Emilio Andere and Steven Arellano met as freshmen at UChicago.
- Steven worked on high-performance computing and AI infrastructure at Two Sigma, Google, and Sei Labs (BS/MS CS, UChicago).
- Emilio published ML security research at NeurIPS (2022) and trained weather models at Argonne National Lab (Mathematics, UChicago).
